Hunger P.O.D. Squad: Make A Difference Today!

Members of the Hunger P.O.D. Squad are individuals committed to learning more about the issue of hunger, spreading the word about the issue, and doing what they can to help solve hunger in Colorado. In May, members who committed to learning more gathered at Hunger Free Colorado for their first quarterly learning session.  At this session, members watched the documentary A Place At The Table.  This film examines the issue of hunger through the lens of three people who are struggling with food insecurity: Barbie, a single Philadelphia mother who grew up in poverty and is trying to provide a better life for her two kids; Rosie, a Colorado fifth-grader who often has to depend on friends and neighbors to feed her and has trouble concentrating in school; and Tremonica, a Mississippi second-grader whose asthma and health issues are exacerbated by the largely empty calories her hardworking mother can afford.  It was striking to watch the reactions of these individuals to the film and the stories – shock, anger, disappointment – but even more powerful was the resolve of the group to work on solutions to the issue.

Participants wanted to learn more about the labyrinth that is the Farm Bill, how the Farm Bill funds federal nutrition programs, how changes to that funding impacts families like those in the film, and how they could voice their opinion and weigh in with legislators about the Farm Bill. Participants’ interest in solutions ranged from increasing locally sourced food to sustainable food systems to nutrition to the health consequences of hunger.  The group identified many different ways that each of them would get even more engaged in solutions to hunger in their community.  Based on the commitment and energy of this group, we are moving toward a hunger-free Colorado!
